Sound-Problem: Permission denied

hi!

in order to check, whether I succeeded in setting up my sound card, I tried to play a song in xmms ... but all I get is the following error:

Code:
Message: output format: 7
ALSA lib pcm_hw.c:1055:(snd_pcm_hw_open) open /dev/snd/pcmC0D0p failed: Permission denied

** WARNING **: alsa_setup(): Failed to open pcm device (default): Permission denied
I suppose, this is because I'm logged on as a regular user - or am I wrong?

any ideas, how to get it working?

thanks!

'ls -l /dev/snd/pcmC0D0p'

then add your user account to the group that owns that device by editting /etc/group or by some utility program. See 'man group' for more info.

Alternately, you could just chmod the device to give the needed permissions to everyone instead of just the user and group owners.
