Sound problem: alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such device

I recently reinstalled Fedora core 2 after moving my computer.

At first it didn't detect the on-board soundcard; I figured it was a hardware problem.

But now it detects it; the module's "snd-intel8x0", the model is 82801DB (ICH4) AC'97 Audio Controller.

Thing is, the volume slider keeps falling to zero; I drag it up, it slides back down all by itself. And the test sound won't play. The alsamixer command in a terminal turns up "alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such device".

Is this an alsamixer problem? Is this hardware? How do I get sound on my computer again?
