Sound: "play command" terminal gone?

Hi people,

I have a little problem here, i use programs that make the use of the play commmand in the terminal.
But i have Suse 9.0 and there actually is no play command.
I think i miss a program that has such a command in the console.

Someone knows which program i need to install?

thx,

You need Sox :) http://www.spies.com/Sox/

Sox is also available as a bundled package with SuSE9.0, if you'd prefer the RPM.

Damn sorry, i have another problem here, now i sometimes here a sound... ( i use aMsn) and when i now want to use xmms at the same time it doesn't play any sounds.

That means my progs can't use sounds at the same time... in windows i can play music and use msn sounds at the same time...

someone knows how to fix this?

Can't be done, Linux doesn't permit multiple audio streams simultaneously. It's quality of sound that matters here, not the mixing of streams. Still, it would make a nice additional function to ALSA.

Ok, i just needed 5.1 sound. so i went over to my onboard ac97 soundcard. It has a via chipset onboard.
I got the card working, although xmms plays music (plugin: alsa 1.2.8), but when i try to go to configuration panel, and test my sound it doens't work, also when kde starts it doesn't ring any sound....

btw i think artsd isnt running but another driver called alsa? or something?
when i do:
Mike@linux:~> artsd
ALSA lib pcm_hw.c:1055:(snd_pcm_hw_open) open /dev/snd/pcmC0D0p failed: Device or resource busy
Error while initializing the sound driver:
device: default can't be opened for playback (Device or resource busy)

someone knows how to fix this?

thx,
