We checked the speakers with a cd player and they are working so we know it isn't bad speakers. I tried using the soundcard detector and couldn't hear the sample sound. Here is the output of lspci

i did lsmod and there is tons of snd modules loaded. i can post that output if necessary. I remember reading something about sending data to /dev/dsp to test sound or something but don't remember what i read. Does anyone know what i should try? thanks for any replies in advance.
