sound mixer missing on Mandriva 10.2 boot

when booting my Mandriva 10.2 desktop I get the following mixer load fail message from boot.log:
May 8 19:37:57 dads mdadm: mdadm startup succeeded
May 8 19:37:58 dads sound: Loading sound module (snd-intel8x0) succeeded
May 8 19:37:58 dads alsa.dev: execvp: No such file or directory
May 8 19:37:58 dads sound: Loading mixer settings failed
May 8 19:37:58 dads xfs: xfs startup succeeded

My sound system appears to be working but I cant run skype because I get a read failure on /dev/dsp. Are these related and I how do i fix the above error message.

i'm running a custom kernel on version 2.6.11-6 with ALSA compiled but no OSS.
Regards
D.
