sound, Intel DH67CLB3, snd_hda_intel (via optical output)

I have audio working great through the headphone jack (analog). When I connect the optical cable to the optical out of the board there is no sound.

I have the following: Intel DH67CLB3, CentOS 5.8 2.6.18-308.1.1.el5, alsa-lib-1.0.17-1.el5,
alsa-utils-1.0.17-6.el5, mpd-0.16-1.el5.rf

Any suggestions as to what I could try? I saw this post but unsure if this is entirely relevant:

Thanks aus9.

The screenshot is attached here. I'm certain I'm not running pulseaudio. I'm also certain nothing is muted in the mixer.

Interestingly enough I can hear "front left, front right" with this: 'speaker-test -Dplug:spdif -t wav -c 6'

Found on this page: http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Using_ALS...r-test_utility

Hey aus9 --thanks a bunch for your help with this. I finally got it working. I think ultimately unmuting all three iec958 (spdif) was what did the trick. One of the items below notes SPDIF is muted by default on Red Hat (+CentOS). Just so the next poor shmuck reading this has a little more to go by, these are some other things I did:

Tried various speaker-test settings (part of alsa-utils)

Code:
 speaker-test -Dplug:spdif -t wav -c 6
 speaker-test -Dplug:surround51 -t wav -c 6
 speaker-test -Dplug:iec958 -t wav -c 6

Installed mplayer and tried a couple of files. The .ac3 file can be downloaded at one of the sites below.

 mplayer sample.mp3
 mplayer surround_test.ac3
