sound input not working on skype and etc

multimedia seems to work fine but when the input from the mic is tested with skype it doesn't work. I've run alsaconf also. checked if the output on /dev/dsp is ok but it's not "cat: /dev/dsp: Input/output error".
my card is Intel ICH5 (ac97).

I browsed google over for a solution but nothing helped.

You could recreate /dev/dsp using this command:

mknod /dev/dsp c 14 3
chgrp audio /dev/dsp

To make it accessible to all users after doing that:

chmod a+rw /dev/dsp
