Sound in Wine under RedHat 9? (Hey, that rhymes!)

Ok, I am a Linux n00b, so take that into consideration when reading this.
I've been using RedHat 9 for about a week (my first linux experience) and I installed Wine (compiled it from source) just yesterday. Everything is working ok with the exception of sound. I have none. Linux applications still make the appropriate sounds and I can play MP3s and such, but when it come to using winamp or AIM (or any other program that makes sound for that matter)under Wine, I get nothing from them.
I read somewhere that someone was having the same problem and they fixed it by including a certain module in the kernel and still elsewhere that using artsdriver or artswrapper could correct this. Well, seeing as how I am teh n00b with Linux, I don't want to try messing with my kernel when I know nothing about it. And the artsdriver and artswrapper apps/packages/whatever? I don't know what they are other than that they are primarily KDE sound utilities, which doesn't really apply to my situation (at least I don't think they do).

Any help at all is appreciated.

Oh, and if anyone can tell me how to get wine to access my USB ports, that would be great.

Thanks again.
