Sound has background white noise. SUSE 9.1

I am using SUSE 9.1 Pro. The sound is functional but has a background
white noise. The computer also runs WinXP and the sound is very good.
If I have to reinstall sound files, how do I do thar.

You could probably run the program "alsaconf" to reinstall the sound drivers for your card. ( You run this program from the shell console as root )

However, it sounds to me that you have an unused input active and cranked up. You might want to check that first in a mixer program such as kmix or alsamixer.
