Sound from multiple sources

How would I make it so I can hear sounds from multiple sources? For instance, I'd like to have xmms playing music in the background as I play UT2004 or other games, but whenever I try, the program who was playing sound first 'takes authority' and cancels out the sound of the other program.

Thanks ahead of time for your responses.

You'll need to use ALSA for sound and use the dmix plugin to mix sounds. This works well, but some apps aren't alsa-aware and will not play sound if another app is already playing a sound.

Is there a way to do it without using Alsa? I have a lot of difficulty when trying to use Alsa with my soundcard, unfortunately, and am using OSS.

I don't know if it's possible with OSS. I switched to alsa along with switching to the 2.6 version of the kernel.

What kind of soundcard do you have and what kind of problems did you encounter configuring alsa?

I don't remember what problems I had with Alsa, I set up this box a while ago; I am using a Creative SoundBlaster Live 24-bit.

try searching the forums a bit to see if someone else might have your same problem, i.e.:
