sound conflicts ?

I've got gnome DE running on debian 2.6.8.

While in gnome, i cannot use rhythmbox or any other software to play mp3's
because i get the error:

"OSS device '/dev/dsp' is already in use by another program"


Any help apreciated!

i don't use gnome and never have so i'm certainly no expert but i think yo either have to turn off esd or pipe through esd
