Sound card detected but still no sound

Though during installation my inbuilt sound card was detected correctly but still there is no sound output on my system. During bootup there is no error message but during shutdown the following errors are reported:
1. modprobe could not find module sound-services
2. modprobe could not fing module sound-slot

The following details of sound card were displayed during installation,
Vendor: VIA Technologies
Model: VT82C686 AC97 Audio Controller
Module: via82cxxx_audio

Please help urgently.

what distro?

Check your /etc/modules.conf. It should have these lines in it (I have that chipset myself and this is a mandrake distro)

alias sound-slot-0 via82cxxx_audio

alias char-major-14 soundcore

alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss
