Sony DCR-HC30 and Ubuntu
 

Hello,
New Ubuntu user since 10.04 and having a good time learning command line usage. Have everything working except my handy-cam. I am trying to download from the camera using fire-wire and Ubuntu 10.10. Seems the camera is not recognized. Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to LinuxQuestions.
I will have your thread moved to a more appropriate forum. To download video via firewire look into kino and dvgrab. Make sure the correct firewire modules are being loaded.

No answers for 2 weeks, do you have more details? Some suggestions:

1. If you are trying d/l from the cam on the CLI (command line), say so explicitly.
2. Provide a link to specs. & other info. for the cam.
3. Did you look into kino and dvgrab, as suggested?
4. Did you make sure the correct firewire modules are being loaded?
5. Save us checking on Ubuntu 10.10, which kernel are you using?

If you will give us more info. to help us help you, then I would have a good excuse to bump this to the top of the forum. If that doesn't work, consider asking (use the "Report" button) us to move this to the Ubuntu sub-forum.

Hi, Thanks for the follow up on this posting. I have tried all the suggestions listed and all info I could find on google search. I am able to use Windows for now and will try again later to solve this problem.

That answers my questions 3 & 4, what about 1, 2, & 5? BTW, I deliberately numbered them so that you could number your answers w/o having to retype the question.

Also, sometimes posting your Google search terms is helpful.

The computer is a Compaq 3045 and lspci shows my IEEE 1394 to be a SiS firewire controller.

After issuing sudo modprobe raw1394, kernel.log displays:

groups displays:

Also tried: :~$ echo 'KERNEL=="raw1394", GROUP="video", MODE="0664"' | sudo tee /etc/udev/rules.d/50-raw1394.rules && sudo restart udev
and got this: kernel: [ 8280.271405] udev[2816]: starting version 163

Kino reports: Warning:raw1394 module not loaded or.......

This camera and cable work fine with Windows XP so, it's not a connector or cable issue. This is not a high priority with me right now but, would like to get it working someday as I hate windows after using Ubuntu...
