Something similar to Panic's Transmit on Linux?

I've recently been working on an apple machine, and have been using Panic software's Transmit FTP client. I really like the features it provides, especially the ability to edit something on the server without having to first copy it to your machine (it handles this in the background, saving you a step or two).

Are there any FTP clients on Linux with this feature, and comparable features?

Even better; if you are running Gnome and Nautilus you can select the menu Places->Connect to server. You then have your choice of protocols, including FTP. Once connected, you can interact with the FTP server as if the files are local. Just close any windows, and after a timeout the connection to the server will be closed. Double-click the icon, and the connection will be re-established. It's very cool.
