Something I'm doing is making Scientific Linux 6.4 run slow. I don't know what it is?

The moment the OS glitches on any of my six computers, I format the hd, and re-install a fresh Scientific Linux 6.4.. I avoid SCL 6.5, and Fedora, and CentOS 6 OS's, for various reasons.. I tried them all several times.. I just didn't like how they ran and felt, compared to Scientific Linux 6.4..
This is a fresh install of Scientific Linux 6.4 in a Toshiba-110 notebook, with 6-gigs RAM..

Problem in a Scientific Linux 6.4 new install, is that mp3 music runs as streaming only, and downloaded Youtube mp4 videos just don't play.. I can't find anything in the Scientific Linux forum, plus their leaders are hellishly grumpy and insulting.. So I go into "CentOS Media Tips" webpage for the necessary codes and programs to make media work properly.. and I add eight security and Youtube addons to Firefox.. But it seems something in those installs makes the OS run a lot slower, and eventually the OS glitches up, worse in time.. I don't know if it's black-hack bullying, or if it's my software choices..? It seems as if it's the flavors of blackhacking attacking.. Are CentOS media programs not compatible with Scientific Linux..? Does adding CentOS programs to Scientific Linux open any hack exploit-holes in Scientific Linux..?

Where do I get the necessary programs and codes to run media properly in Scientific Linux, besides from CentOS..? Which ones to I choose..? Which ones do I boycott..?
Is there a user list of compatible/incompatible programs for Scientific Linux..?
Is there any way to know if a Firefox addon/extension is safe and compatible or not..?
List of FireFox addons I'm running with:
*1-click youtube video downloader..
*Adblock plus..
*Download youtube videos as mp4..
*Ghostery..
*No-script..
*Selfdestructing cookies..
*World IP..
*Youtube unblocker...

Are any of those FireFox addons problematic or buggy..?
Are there any other FireFox addons I should be adding..?
My IP is a target of a few very nasty childish black hat bullies, so I need to add things that keep them out a little better than a bare bones OS does..
I am forced to re-install an OS every couple weeks.. I need to find a way to re-install a loaded customized fresh OS faster and easier.. Will an external hd do it..? I run my personal files on external hard drives only, so the incessant hack-attacks never touch, nor upload, nor damage, my 500 megab's of valuable files..

unless you HAVE to use 6.4 ( as your boss MANDATES it in the lab) 6.5 is the current
Yes SL dose backport SECURITY patches

reinstalling it on ?? what??
some unknown to us thing you are calling a " glitch"

it a bit well " odd" and NOT needed
you will need to reinstall mamy many updates from the SL-security.repo EVERY TIME
and lock out the 6.x and lock it at 6.4

Quote:
This is a fresh install of Scientific Linux 6.4 in a Toshiba-110 notebook, with 6-gigs RAM..
you are aware that RHEL/Cent/SL do not work well on a lot of laptops
laptop use was just an afterthought

as to mp3
that support is not installed by default
and installing from the thirdparty repos can KILL a install
you REALLY MUST!!! have "yum-priorites" installed and CONFIGURED!!!!!!
-- PS
rpmforge is at 6.5 and NOT 6.4
you really DO NEED sl 6.5 installed to use the multimedia on rpmforge

Also
i have KILLED many many many Cent and SL installs just TRYING to get multimedia to work

right now
I DO NOT !!!!!! even try to have mp3,mp4,wmv,vfl, support even installed
trying to do so will normally kill your install

Quote:
I can't find anything in the Scientific Linux forum,
and you likely would never
now
if it relates to hardware in a lab
you WILL
mp3's are not needed in the lap
running lab equipment or computers in the lab in needed.

no WE ARE NOT
--- and good day to you sir....

Great!.. Well that said a lot about this problem.. I'm a bit wiser now, Thanks a bunch..

_____________

So it seems, that applying "rpm forge 6.5 in a 6.4 system" is what's killing the OS's..?
Can I get the rpm forge for SCL 6.4..? or it that lost history..?
Anyone out there who isn't grumpy, who knows how to get mp3 and mp4 playing properly in Scientific Linux 6.4 without it wrecking the OS too much..? It looks as though I'll need to install 6.5.. but 6.5 is missing the systems monitor, which I like to run whilst I'm downloading, given that there are destructive pests filtering my IP..

SCL 6.5, in some areas, feels a little like "walking on broken glass..? I don't know why..? 6.4 doesn't have that horrid feel.. 6.4 feels smooth, soft, gentle, true, real, alive, almost like it "breathes and beats with the user".. They just do..

If I pay for RedHat's general OS, will it run audio and video media properly, in mp3 and mp4..? How does SCL 6.4 compare to $RedHat OS..?
I'm asking because I don't know, and want to know.. I ain't looking to be punished for not knowing.. I'm just asking about it so to learn about it, so I can play music and video from this particular notebook, for the little squirrel who lives in my huge shed.. A couple days ago I found three keys pulled off the notebook's keyboard just 2 inches from the On button.. Seems she tried to turn the music On.. So somehow I need to figure out a way so the squirrel can switch her music On and Off herself, without her little majesty taking my computer apart.. But first I need to find a way to get the music playing...

ScientificLinux 6.5 is a CUSTOM rebuild of redhats RHEL6.5
and as such is NOT a good choice for home and laptop use

NOW sl6 can be ran on some laptops
BUT not all laptops ( there is NO optimos gpu/cpu support in rhel6 )
a lot of laptops use custom hardware that is not supported in RHEL6

RHEL6 is GREAT on a server
and IBM or HP are GREAT for running RHEL6
The average HOME desktop computer "? might ?" not have problems
there is very little wireless support for RHEL6

so a laptop that is almost always wireless and uses "odd" custom graphics hardware WILL HAVE PROBLEMS

but not all laptops will have problems , just most of them

check if your hardware in a certified to work computer
the "hardware compatibility list"
https://hardware.redhat.com/

ScientificLinux 6 like CentOS 6
uses the REDHAT documentation
https://access.redhat.com/site/docum...erprise_Linux/

all multimedia support for sl6 is in thirdparty repos
and they can and do often break RHEL/CentOS/sl

watching movies and playing games or listening to music is NOT something you use a server in a server room for
nor are these things you normally want employes doing in the Office
nor your undergrads doing in the lab .

there are Better Operating systems for doing those activities

that is why i run OpenSUSE as my everyday operating system
and use ScientificLinux for WORK for the software that NEEDS IT

--- to add ---
ScientificLinux basically dose NOT have really any documentation nor guides.
YOU as the user need to take other guides and PORT them for use on SL6

as in
you have to port the Fedora mjmwired guide for multimedia FOR USE ON SL6
http://www.mjmwired.net/resources/mjm-fedora-f19.html
mp3
http://www.mjmwired.net/resources/mj...a-f19.html#mp3
media players
http://www.mjmwired.net/resources/mj...l#mediaplayers
flash
http://www.mjmwired.net/resources/mj...f19.html#flash

you have to port them for use on SL6

the same goes for the CentOS wiki
http://wiki.centos.org/
that is mostly for CentOS 5 , but with some cent6
like the thirdparty repos
http://wiki.centos.org/AdditionalResources/Repositories
and the "yum-priorities" plugin
http://wiki.centos.org/PackageManagement/Yum/Priorities

YOU as the SL6 user need to port them for use to SL6

and you need to port the redhat documentation for use on SL6
https://access.redhat.com/site/docum...erprise_Linux/

Correct. Cern mentions that RHEL can be used for documentation because of its compatibility. Rather than make a mirror of the redhat documentation, they just list the url. http://linux.web.cern.ch/linux/scientific6/docs/

So I've got a lot of reading to do.. Thanks for the many links...

It seems that Scientific is a state of the art OS for state of the art machines and experts.. not me.. but I do so love the way it feels and runs and customizes, and it's so super secure, and perfect simple basic, but for the music and video problems..

On your advice I'm gonna try SUSE again.. I hopes I can get it to install this time..
How secure from blackhat attacks is SUSE compared to Scientific..?

It's try SUSE.. And try to figure out what "RH porting Scientific" means, and how to do it..? I'm working on it..
(This old guy is getting tired.. A tip: Don't get old)..

NO SL is NOT "state of the art "
not by a LONG SHOT
SL6 is very dated
the major versions of the OLD code used have NOT changed in 4 years
and will NEVER change in the next 5 years of support

SL is a rebuild of RHEL
redhat is a very STABLE operating system
VERY STABLE !!! as in it dose NOT crash -- ever .
but this comes at a cost
the software used is OLD
well tested and patched but OLD
and the major versions of software in any version is LOCKED
rhel6 is still using Gnome2 and NOT gnome3
gnome3 will NEVER!!!!! be in any rhel6 version
-- never---

To clarify some more: Scientific Linux is a build of RHEL for use by CERN and other such institutions. CentOS is the general purpose rebuild of RHEL.

As far as security is concerned: do not assume a (any) Linux distribution is safe and secure out of the box but audit its security posture and harden it yourself. Linux may be free to use but using it shouldn't be free of responsibilities.

If I choose minimal desktop at install, then add from CentOS media tips webpage what plays music and videos, plus Gimp, and Gedit, and maybe Focuswriter.. which is all I use the OS for.. will there then be less conflicts..?

Would be nice if there was a super secure basic RedHat Scientific Linux spin, that would do well with FireFox, Gimp, audio, videos, and basic writing.. plus System Monitor.. The rest I just don't need in an OS..
So I'm going to try a minimal desktop install, and see if that works..?
I'm thinking that maybe the reason for the conflicts, is "too many variable unfinished programs all knitted together in a mesh mix mass mess".. Is that it..?

I need a Gnome-2 desktop.. The Gnome-3 desktop is way too active and gaudy.. It's like "a Swiss army knife with 200 features".. Gnome-3 makes the OS feel like I'm back in Windows-98. very not fun.. Gnome-3 feels like "it's a baby's fisherprice plastic cartoon character collage-toy spinning above the baby's crib".. I wants to own my desktop.. not have a silly over active flishy-flashy beast owning my desktop.. It's My computer.. I should own the desktop.. I like my desktop clean and quiet.. Some do...

There should be a super basic OS core, and a list of installs, all labeled simple under topic and subject categories what the programs are for, with warnings about potential conflicts with specific other programs.. But I know that would take a lot of time and effort to build and setup.. And Linux people just don't have the time and resources to fulfill every silly request that comes along, when they're all working on their own projects..
I and millions of others just want an OS that works for basic needs.. I don't want to have to learn the whole dern Linux system for to get me an OS that works for what I need it to do.. It's like my cell-phone.. It works when I push a few buttons.. That's all I need to know about my $1 garage-sale cell-phone.. It stays charged and off in my pocket, there for emergencies only.. I read that cell-phone radiation broils brains..

Fyi: Gnome2 doesn't exist anymore. The mate desktop is the continuation of that project.

I meant, "the desktop in Scientific Linux 6.4".. I thought that's Gnome-2..? I like the "SCL-6.4 desktop"..
I wish I could get it in a new "Ubuntu Studio" install.. I sure tried.. I ended up destroying ten OS-installs trying..
I am just trying to get a basic nice simple quiet clean desktop.. One the doesn't break extreme deep self-trance creative rolls.. like when I'm playing music to the planet ("youtube: sky sounds 2014"), and managing to still use the keyboard to write new science.. Do you like my choice of sky tunes..? Do you have any requests to play to the planet we love..? Needs be wind instrument.. percussion instruments don't do well in the atmosphere for some reason..?
Should we spin the moon to face the other side of the moon to earth for a while..? Nasa would freak, again..

you do realize that the OLD version of "The Gimp"
in sl6 is 2.6
you can not use the current gimp 2.8 plugins from the gimp plugin repository
nor will SL6 ever have the soon to be out Gimp 2.10 or Gimp 3.0

you will never be able to use any of the new gimp plugins

nor can you use the new firefox 29
you need to use the OLD "long term support" firefox in the sl repo
FireFox 24 LTS

if you try to use 29
it WILL !!! randomly crash a few times a day
there is a software incompatibility with the older versions of parts of xorg in sl6

keep it set to "Enforcing" and " Targeted"
this is the " security Enhancement " that the NSA ( the software hackers there) came up with to well STOP even them

OH Yeah! That's what I really really needed to know..
Now I've got something valuable to go with.. Thanks!

_____________

"keep it set to "Enforcing" and " Targeted"
this is the " security Enhancement " that the NSA ( the software hackers there) came up with to well STOP even them"

It sounds a bit like "dirty FireFox addons".. Any bets they somehow set a trojan in it, that's designed to be undetected, by building it in tiny isolated bits and pieces, which reassembles itself on call, or in time..? It's probably a very well designed backdoor into the Linux system.. You can't trust those nsa demons, not even when they're smiling.. rather, especially when they're smiling...

Try an experiment.. Publish in your protected OS that you found a thick gold vein by a easy access creek, and the map.. Set up a hidden motion detector camera to watch the area.. Them mindless thievin' greedy pigs will be there in a couple days.. probably 6:AM Sunday or Monday morning.. and there will be someone in sort of plain view watching your house while they're out in the bush doing it.. which would prove this trojan theory..
Off the top, I'm guessing there's something partially compressed in that thing, which uncoils like a hermit crab coming out of its 6-shells in pieces, and combines into one working entity.. NSA would do something like that..

Can you link me to the minute that item was initially announced, and who worked on it..? I'd like to research its badness and evils...

There should be a fake in-house Internet, that's used exclusively dev in RH, and Ubuntu, and all the biggies, to test out security breaches in other people's so called safe and clean programs, and especially the FF addons..
Seems it's the so called "authorities" who are responsible for most of the e-viruses and IP attacks.. It's as if the ones who are responsible for policing and enforcing are the ones doing all the crime, and costing the free world all that damage, grief, and expense.. The NSA should be disbanded and erased "before it hurts someone"..

First thought on that using that bit of NSA security, is "I would be better off not touching it with a ten foot pole".. but what do I know.. me am just a dumb ole compooder novice...

By any chance.. Is this "Linux Questions" Linux computer forum owned and run by NSA..? Just asking...
