Some DVDs don't play without root
 
Hi,
I have trouble watching some DVDs in Linux. They are from the season 2 box of ST Voyager and the strange thing is that some work and some not.

First I tried with Kaffeine in Suse 11.1. I get to the menu, but when I want to start an episode, I get the error message "The source seems encrypted, and can't be read.
Your DVD is probably crypted. According to your country laws, you can or can't use libdvdcss to be able to read this disc. (Media stream scrambled/encrypted)".
I checked that I have libdvdcss installed and even re-installed it.
My next try was with VLC and this time I get sound, but a terrible picture.
I also tried it on a different PC with Ubuntu with the same result (no picture).
My last attempt under Linux was to rip the DVD, but again the same strange image.

Then I tried it as root and it worked. Now can anyone, please, explain this?

have you installed " libdvdcss " ? that decrypts most videos
some that have the sony "root-kit" DRM will need to be played in lindvd

It can only mean that playing DVDs as root gives you access to system resources that an ordinary user doesn't have. This could arise from badly installed programs or libraries, or the difference in search path between root and user.

If you run the DVD player software from the command line, you might see some useful error messages printed to the terminal.

I have libdvdcss installed.

Here is my output when I start kaffeine as user:

The only difference a diff showed up that seems to matter is that onlý as user I have the following lines:

libdvdread: Could not open /dev/sda1 with libdvdcss.
libdvdread: Can't open /dev/sda1 for reading
libdvdread: Device /dev/sda1 inaccessible, CSS authentication not available.

So apparently libdvdcss cannot access my drive. How could I fix that? And why does it work with other DVDs from the same Season Box?
Could it be a bug in libdvdcss, since it happens both on Suse and Ubuntu?
