Jikes? I am unfamiliar with that?

Software for movie viewing, the best there is:
www.mplayerhq.hu
The next best:
http://xine.sf.net
The rest:
www.xmms.org (some)
aviplay
Xmovie
Umm... Something KDE I'm sure

Configuration with java... Actually a search on this site for java should reveal more than you have ever wanted to know and a whole lot more.

As a side note;
You should place your distro in your "usercp" at the top of the page. This will place it under your username in the distribution area so we can view what distro we need to be specific towards should there be something about that distro needing extra explainations and such.

Cool

The most “Newbie Friendly” Player is xine, in my personal opinion. The GUI is easy to add, and all of the controls are obvious. Also image scaling seems easier in Xine than in mplayer. Mplayer is more for the power user than anyone else.

Copy the file in a safe directory (when you can unpack it). Then uncompress:
tar jxvf MPlayer-0.90.tar.bz2
A directory will be created with source files. There should be INSTAL:L or README descibing the installation. The following sequence of command should work OK (when you cd to the newly-created dir):
./configure
make
su
(enter root password when it asks you)
make install
