software to erase corrupted files?

a few days ago i was copying some files from my hard drive to a usb mass storage device. i used ubuntu rescue mode to mount the usb device and copy files onto it. i accidentally started to copy the wrong directory to the device, so in my impatience, i unplugged the usb cord rather than wait for the files to copy and then delete them.

the problem is that the directory that was copying when the cord was unplugged is now terribly corrupt. the names of the corrupted files are full of accented letters and symbols, the corrupt directory contains many more files and directories than the original, and the corrupt directory is 50 gigabytes instead of 30 megabytes, as it should have been. very strange that the directory contains 50 gb when the hard drive is only 40 gb...

i tried to delete the directory and its files and subdirectories in:

the gnome file explorer
the linux terminal (as root)
windows xp explorer

all attempts failed. when i tell it to delete the directory, it says "cannot read from device." how do i erase the folder? is there software that will do this?

hello karl_marx i hope that wasn't the communist manifesto stored on that disk. If it was, I think its gone. Don't worry the U.S. constitution is on paper and well guarded and civilization will survive. As for your disk I recommend you try to reformat it. I have done this from a windows machine but not from linux. Give that a try.
