Software to convert image formats?

I need a software to convert image files. Preferably, one that converts in batch or let me scriptize it form the command line. Need all traditional formats, jpeg, gif, bmp, tiff, and jpeg quality settings.

Pixie plus version 0.5.4.410 crashes badly when I try to convert things. Gimp is a nice software, but how do I batch it? If I do file by file, I'll never end it.

Thanks!

for i in *.jpg; do convert $i `echo $i | cut -d '.' -f1`.png; done
