Mencoder is a very good tool to convert from AVI to other formats, in particular when used with ffmpeg's libraries.
There is transcode, too.

thanks for ur reply..

used mencoder to encode the avi file to mpeg format..

the converted file is not able to play in windows media player as i have to send this file to someone..

i used the following command :

$ mencoder -oac lavc -ovc lavc -ofps 30 -o test.mpeg test.avi

this command does convert a 245 MB AVI file to 15 MB mpeg file.. i am able to play it in mplayer on linux.. but unable to play it on windows..

am i doing anything wrong with the above conversion command

i know that the AVI file is 30 fps and hence i want the same fps for the output file also..

Something must be clear first: there is the MPEG container format, which is mostly used to contain MPEG streams, and there are MPEG video formats, which can be contained by either MPEG container files, or AVI container files (typical with MPEG4 video streams).

May I ask why you want to convert? Is it for mastering a DVD/SVCD? Or do you actually want a MPEG4 video? You have to know that 99% of video formats are lossy (ie: you loose precision), so converting a video is usually a bad idea. However, this can be done; you have to know:
- How long (seconds) is the movie?
- How much place (bytes) do you want the movie to fit in?
- Does it need to be real-time? Fast? Or do you aim quality?
