software to archive emails ?

hi,
I need a program / script to download my email (including attachments) from my gmail account, so that I can burn them onto a CD.
I want to be able to look at them without a mail client, but apparently most e-mail clients have their own format in which they save e-mails and attachments or even save all mail in one file.

Once, I have them on the CD I want to be able to look at them from other PCs, without having a mail client installed.

Sorry, I guess this is a little bit hard to understand....

I use debian, btw.

Well, most clients have a unique naming scheme but they are still plain text files. 'cat' one and see...

You probably just want to use a sed script or something to give them sensible names. As for how to get your gmail to your local box, it does allow pop3 connections.
