software similar to photoshop


I have SuSE 10 and I need a tool that can do the following
A poster when read it close up it is all words
but if I look at it in a distance it is some picture like human or animal or whatsoever
Anyone knows is there a GNU tool that can do that?
If not, what will be the software tool that I need to do such project

It's not quite words, but you can convert an image to ascii characters quite easily, using the convert tool (part of ImageMagick) and pbmtoascii (part of netpbm-progs), both of which are available as part of most distributions. For example:

convert input.jpg output.pbm
pbmtoascii < output.pbm > output.ascii
