Software recommendation in linux

Hi there, i'm new in Linux Environment. Would like some recommendations on softwares to be used on Linux. Previously, i was using win2k and some programs have greatly helped in my daily activities.

I will list down some of my favorite softwares in windows, please reply to this thread if you know any similar software which performs as good as or better than these. Any related article can also be a great help to me.

1. Macromedia Dreamweaver - Web Page Design
2. Adobe Photoshop - Graphix Editting
3. Macromedia Flash - Animation Design
4. FlashGet - Downloader
5. WinDVD Player - Media Player for VCD, DVD
6. Messenger Services - ICQ(?), Yahoo Messenger

Any reply would be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Regards.

The gimp is the closest you are going to get to photoshop, there are some differences but its over all a very good piece of software.

I'm not really aware of any Dreamweaver equilivent, some people have had success using Wine to run Dreamwear under linux, but if you are just looking for a really good editor, then I recommend Bluefish or Quanta.

Gaim is an excellent messanger that handles AIM, Yahoo Messanger, MSN and a couple of others. Yahoo also puts out a linux version of their software.

I'm not currently aware of any Macromedia flash creation software for linux but I could be wrong.

1. Quanta is a really good text editor tailored specifically for HTML. Another thing to look into is Nvu which is a new project started to fill the need of a decent Open Source WYSIWYG web authoring package.

2. The GIMP is a great program. Less intuitive than Photoshop, but once you get used to it, you should be able to do ALMOST anything you can in Photoshop, with a few things that it does better than Photoshop. GIMP 2 is in RC stage, and is VERY nice.

3. Dunno of anything that fits this.

4. wget, built in download manager of Firebird or Mozilla. I don't really have a use for anything more, so I havent looked into it.

5. Ogle for playing DVDs, mplayer for movie files of any sort.

6. gaim lets you connect to Yahoo, Aim, MSN, Jabber, ICQ, etc. Works great. X-Chat is great for IRC.

4) Downloader for X (d4X).

3. Flash for Linux

wow--i didn't know about that Nvu thing. it actually looks pretty sweet, and might be halfway decent since it's sponsored by Lindows. i've been running Dreamweaver under wine, but a native linux equivalent would be a lot nicer.

Be aware that it is pretty much a BRAND NEW project. It might be missing some features and/or be unstable. YMMV.

thank u guys so much for the replies.

I've downloaded Ogle from freshrpms.net

ogle-0.9.2-1.fr.i386.rpm
ogle_gui-0.9.2-1.fr.i386.rpm

these 2 files seemed to need alot of library files for dependency. I've followed all of those and installed some lib files like libmad*,libdvdread*,libdvdcss* and etc.

but the problem now is when i playback my DVDs, the playback seems choppy to me. Eventually some DVDs will hang the system, it's like the harddisk is doing some kind of heavy load processing.

From the GUI of this program, It states that Ogle - Xv SHM, does that mean i'm using a X11 video driver ? Is there any better one to improve the playback performance ?

whansard 02-10-2004 12:28 AM

choppiness is probably caused by the dvd drive not running in dma mode.

heister 02-10-2004 01:30 AM

hey thanks man.
I've set the DMA mode on for my dvd rom and it works better now.

# hdparm -c -d /dev/hda

this is the command to view the info of the device.

# hdparm -c 1 -d 1 /dev/hda

this is the command to set the I/O to 32bit and DMA mode on.
