[SOLVED] Software RAID

I have several mirrored arrays, I'd like to set up a pool of several spare drives that can be hot swapped into an array if there is a failure.

I really don't want to assign a drive into an array, I'd rather have the array 'grab' a spare out of the pool.

Is this doable with mdadm? If so, what is the term for this that I can search for?

Disclaimer: I have never done this, I just think your question is interesting and am curious to find an answer.

You should look for the terms "spare group" (sometimes written with a hyphen) and "domain" in the mdadm man page or the internet. Using these features, you can move a disk from one array to the other.
