software/modem problem

Sys is AMD Athlon 2800, 512m ram 2 160g hd's. MDK 10 / KDE 3.1.

I'm not sure I'll do a good job of explaining what's wrong but I'll try.
While on line, everything goes dead.
The external modem is on and all lit up.
The 'kppp statistics' graph is 'flatlined'
Nothing is going on.
I can not get e-mail: or surf.
I have to turn off the connection and start over.
Then, the first time I try to go to another page, the same thing happens.
I'm dead in the water again.
All seems okay when I'm only doing e-mail.
The stuff hits the fan when I try to surf the net.

Any idea where to start looking.

There is no problems using my laptop so it's not the phone or ISP.

Have you had a look at what's happening in /var/log/messages (just tail it in a seperate terminal while you're connected to the net, and see what it's dying words were).

The only time I've seen that sort of behaviour personally is with SATA drives in combination with software-assisted modems... <shudders>.
