software installing problem

Hello,
I am new to linux...when i try to install gcc in ubuntu 8.04...i am getting the below error.

root@sharief-desktop:/home/sharief# sudo apt-get install build-essential
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Package build-essential is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
E: Package build-essential has no installation candidate
root@sharief-desktop:/home/sharief#

...i dont know whats the error is...can anyone tell me what to do for this?

You may be missing something in your sources.list file. Can you post the contents of /etc/apt/sources.list The package build-essential definitely exists. It's installed on my system.
Cheers,
jdk

It is normal and common courtesy to reply to a question when you are asking for help. Asking a completely different question is not appropriate. If you have another question start another thread.

Can you be more explicit please. What software are you trying to install? How did you try to install it? What problems happened when you tried to install it. Give as much detail as possible.

You need to install some packages but I can't tell you their names since I don't use Fedora. Do you know how to install packages on Fedora? On Debian-based systems it's called "flashplugin-nonfree" but I don't know if the same name is used on Fedora. I guess you can search package names with yum. If you find the plugin just install the package and restart firefox.

I don't use Fedora so I don't know how yum works. If it is like aptitude then maybe
Code:

yum search [package name or part of package name]
may work.
Surely Fedora must have a tutorial or something on how to use yum.
