software installation message on 2.6

hi, running 2.6.0 here.
this is what i get if i try to install anything from apt (at the end of the installation process, this is the message it exits with.)
Errors were encountered while processing:
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)
what could the problem be? if you need to know anything further, let me know and i shall post here.

as always, thanks.

p.s: if i "dpkg --list | grep 'name'", it shows the software as installed.

p.p.s: i'm running debian/unstable.
