i'm a newbie.. only weeks old.. i'm running mandrake 10.0 official on an emachine 1.7 ghz w/ 384 ram & 80gb hd.. i've downloaded a couple programs & am pretty sure i installed them but can't seem to find the icon to run them.. during me look around trying to find them i ran kpackage.. they both show up there.. one under rpm/applications, the other under rpm/x11/application.. how do i run these..???

I am working on Suse but it should not really mutter.

Installing the software is separated from the X Desktop you are using.

You can start the programs from console by typing their name ( a good method is typing the first few letters and then pressing TAB, this will show you the options).

If you want an icon do the following:

after you know how the program is called, type
"which <prgramname>"

for example:
which mplayer

this will tell you where the program is.

Using your KDE/Gnome//xxx desktop, create an icon to that program-
