Software install problem with Kernel Source... I think!
Hello all,
I am using Mandriva 2006 beta (The one that went out about 2 weeks ago). I installed only the first CD (Just downloaded the second one, needed to install make). I am trying to install ieee80211 and this is an exerpt from the README file.
Quote:
The installation requires the compiled kernel sources or headers
against the matching kernel. These are typically found in:
/lib/modules/\`uname -r\`/build
If that directory does not exist, or is empty, you likely need to
install the kernel source packages for your distribution.
|
Now i have the Kernel 2.6.12 and didn't install anything from CD 2-3. From what I understand, ieee80211 needs the source of the kernel. It should be located under /lib/2.6.12...../modules, right? Because the only thing I got there is some files that I forgot the name they have (All the same though, and only 6-7 of them).
Am I in the left field with that assumption? If not, can I download the kernel sources from kernel.org? Where do I put that after? Is it something that I need to install from the second CD of Mandriva?
I want to get that wireless card working, any help please!!! thanks!

Go to easyurpmi and set things up as they direct. Then do urpmi kernel-sources. Make sure the verion of the sources is the same as your installed kernel.

If you have hardware that may require you to build drivers, then its usually better to get all the installation discs. This ensures that you have a proper working system and then you can build stuff to make your other hardware work. The kernel-source and other development packages are on the installation discs, so I suggest you get all 3 of them.
