Hi I'm wondering if anyone can help I've had a look around on google but I'm either searching for the wrong thing or I'm stupid. Anyways here goes:
I have a debian server in my home that has all my Videos and Music on. I want to stream this to a computer I'm putting together to act as a HTPC. I want to ideally get away with adding no hard-drive (I want to make it as small as possible) to the HTPC and just boot it from some kind of live-cd. I want the HTPC to get it's media directly from the server and be able to sit and watch it on my TV.
Does anyone have any info that could help me? Thanks in advance!
~Jon
I'd say have a look at mythtv. I have a "MythTV Box" in my living room. Works great for TV viewing and recording, but many people use it just to playback their video files.
Plus, it has a ton (and I mean a ton) of add-ons. Go to www.mythtv.org to check it out.
There's a mailing list as well, and the users are very friendly.
Thats an interesting option but it needs a hard-drive to use. I need something that runs from a live-cd environment and allows me to stream from my server. I cant find anything like that with mythtv maybe I should have a bash at making something like this.
I see what you mean. The knoppix mythtv version might come with a live cd. You might want to look into that. Also, you could boot through the network...a lot of people do that as well and run mythtv just fine.
From what I can make out I could run mythtv completely as a live-cd but would require more memory than I have. I have since found geexbox so i'm going to tinker with that a bit.
