[SOLVED] Software control of audio playout process

I want to play an audio file with software such as mplayer, and control the output level from another program that detects external events.
Is there a way to identify the playout process, and inject the control characters into it? I have a feeling it can be done with pipes or something, but I can't pin down how it might work.

I seem to remember vaguely that mplayer has such features, maybe "slave"?

I also recommend trying mpv instead of mplayer. It also has some functionality to be controlled externally.
