Softphone, how to - Disable: Publish SIP/XML

Hello All,

I recently set up a VOIP service and got SIP credentials from the Provider. I downloaded a couple softphones to try out (linphone, sflphone, ekiga, empathy) and have been using sflphone to test everything. I edited my IP tables to open port 5060 and the softphone registered to the Provider's server.

After a min or so however, the server returned "Forbidden 403" error. I asked the Provider why and they told me the following:

The 403 forbidden is a response to a PUBLISH SIP/XML request. You would need to disable that Publish option in the PBX if possible.

I didn't find the option to turn off or disable Publish in any of the softphones I am trying to use. I asked the SFLphone mailserve and the only option I got was to delete the program and recompile it without the Publish command (./configure --disable-presence).

Is this really the only option for disabling Publish? Is there another way to do all this that I'm missing? I am a fairly new user would love an easier fix than compiling source code and then messing with it.

Linphone has the option to disable the "publish presence" feature.
