So where are the applications?

When I install applications etc using Yast in SuSE 9.1 Per it says it installs them but how do I find them?

They don't appear on the start menu as in windoze. I know I can do alt-f2 and type the program name but that means I have to remember them all which.....well I can't!

Help?

You can use a terminal with whereis "name of the program" to find it. Also you could use locate which I think is better. You have to install it, run updatedb and you can search then with locate "name of the program"

Most of the programs get installled in /usr/bin. So that's the first place you might want to have a look at

Mmm does not work for me?

I looked in /bin and /usr/bin for knoda and could not find it. I ran it using alt-f2, but this relies on my knowing the program name?

Why do installed apps not appear on the start menu? How do you add apps to the start menu?

I'm using fluxbox myself. Between gnome or kde I'd go for gnome cause my computer isn't really up to date and it's just faster and I like the gnome look better. However KDE's configuration and menu editing is a lot easier.
edit: it mostly depends on your preferences. Best is to try both and see what you like more.

There's a find button in the menu as well.
