.so not found after ldconfig and setting LD path

I'm trying to install mpiJava which uses the Java Native Interface which work with the existing MPICH libraries.

The install goes error free and two Shared Objects are created. One of which is "libsavesignals.so."

When I launch an mpi job, I get an error from the JVM:
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: /usr/share/mpiJava/lib/libsavesignals.so: /usr/share/mpiJava/lib/libsavesignals.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

I updated the ld.so.conf to include the directory, then I ran ldconfig. When I run "ldconfig -p" there is a line:
libsavesignals.so (libc6,x86-64) => /usr/share/mpiJava/lib/libsavesignals.so

I also set the LD_LIBRARY_PATH to the directory. But when I run mpi again, I get the same .so not found error. Is there something else I'm missing? I'm using Red Hat Enterprise on Amd64 Opterons.

Run ldd on the mpi binary .Is it linking directly to those libs or using dlopen? If it's the latter, you might need to tweak some config file so that it knows where to look.
