SMTP forwarder to mail server behind a firewall

Environment: Fedora 4 as firewall, GroupWise 7 as mail server

Inbound and outbound mail to/from our network must go thru the Fedora 4 server.

We've been using RBL and manually-maintained blacklist for quite a while to control spams reaching the GW7 server... and the solution is totally ineffective. What I'm looking for now is a software that sits on the firewall as a SMTP proxy and forwards all mail to the GW7 server after spam-scanning. Can anyone give me some recommendation? $$$ is a big big problem at my workplace so an open-source solution please! Our GW7 runs on Netware 6.5 and I'm not allow to do anything on the GW7 server.

I know that SpamAssassin is a great one... but I think it must sit together with the mail server on the same computer... does it forward SMTP?

plenty of docs around... http://www.google.com/search?q=spamassassin+gateway

spamassassing doesn't forward smtp, it doesn't know anything about smtp at all, it just rates text streams passed to it.
