smtp clarity?

Ive been wondering, during my search for a better email software above sendmail... about smtp and outgoing mail from both remote users, or localhost applications (like php, and logroller).

IS IT possible to have TWO smtp responders on a single server, so that anything that is 'localhost' will send mail out through 'sendmail', while anything that is OUTSIDE of localhost will require a emailuser/pass to send mail out?

I would like to avoid trying to have to figure out how to make php use something else to send mail out, tying in some sort of emailuser/password so it can send mail out...

I hope I made that question clear. Summary:

1) internal machine apps need to send out unrestricted through localhost
2) remote users need to send out restricted by a valid emailuser/pass (they could be using exploiter outlook, emailer, eudora, nutscrape composer...)
3) do NOT want to have to setup 'ranges' of open ended security-risk ip banks for remote smtp user sends.

I just wonder id thats possible... If so I can then hopfully figure out how to do it with the proper software... heh.
