smplayer will not open in Xubuntu

I have been running smplayer as my media player of choice for some time. I really like it and find both its image and ease of use very attractive. A few days ago I discovered that I cannot open smplayer on my Lenovo Thinkpad which has Xubuntu. As I said I've run smplayer for a good while and never had a problem. I found if I reboot the computer I can then open smplayer. If I quit out of smplayer, however, I cannot reopen it again.

Does anyone know what is going on here? Thanks in advance!

I should add that the version of Xubuntu I am running is 14.04.

Make sure you're using SMPlayer from the PPA --->

@Xubuntu:~$ smplayer -version
This is SMPlayer v. 16.7.0 running on Linux

Interesting. I checked my version of smplayer and the following "Oops...something went wrong" flag came up:

From what I understand, PPA's are a bit too dicey.
