[SOLVED] smplayer doesn't play anything !!!

Hey guys ... been a long time since I was last in here.

I have a small problem that smplayer became unable to play any videos whether local on the hdd, or streaming over the internet.

That happened after a software update on ubuntu 14.04, and it wasn't an upgrade, just update of some system packages. I don't remember what were the packages, but I guess it was something to do with python or some system packages.

So if anyone has any idea about this issue, any suggestions are going to be appreciated.

I don't use smplayer, but I have a couple of ideas for testing.

Have you tested with another media player such as Totem or VLC to make sure the issue is restricted to smplayer?

Try starting smplayer from the command line. It might throw some useful error messages to the terminal.

I actually tried your suggestions before I post here ...

But other media players work just fine ...

I wanted smplayer cause it's more capable with sound quality and streaming media ... vlc is nice but is not as good ...

I also tried to launch it from a terminal ... but no errors ... no nothing ...

The only thing I noticed is that when I check on the loaded binaries from the gnome-system-manager ... I notice that neither mpv or mplayer is loaded ... just smplayer ...

That could be the problem, smplayer is a GUI front-end for mplayer (or mpv). Do you have either one installed?

Check for errors in the logs, go to "Options -> View Logs" in smplayer's menu, or press Ctrl-M for mplayer log and Ctrl-S for smplayer log.

Also, could you please elaborate on the problem you're having?

What exactly happens? Black screen? Error message? Segfaults?

It seems that for some unknown reason smplayer can't start mpv. See if you can get the mpv logs from smplayer, or play a video with mpv in a terminal and check for error messages.

Well, apparently they do. Let's see...

MPlayer is crashing because it can't find an audio filter called "drc":

This is caused by the parameter -af drc,extrastereo (in the first line of the log). It should be -af extrastereo, without the "drc".

MPV crashes because of another audio filter, "extrastereo":

The parameter causing this is --af-add=extrastereo, which should be removed.

So, try this first, go to smplayer's menu "Options -> Preferences -> Advanced". There should be a tab "Options for MPlayer" with fields for options, video filters and audio filters. The offending audio filter probably is defined there. For MPV there should be a similar tab.

If you find the audio filters in the Advanced options, remove all references to them, save the changes and test your videos. In theory everything should be fine then.

But if the audio filters field is empty or the audio filters you're looking for are not there, then you need to check the configuration files for each player. In MPlayer's case, the configuration file is located in your home directory: ~/.mplayer/config

Open this file in a editor and remove or comment any line that references the problematic audio filter. As I mentioned before, I don't have MPV, so I can't tell for sure, but it's configuration file should be either in a file in your home directory, inside a hidden directory (~/.mpv maybe), or under the ~/.config directory.

Give that a try and report back if the problem persists. Good luck!

Thanks everyone for help ... and especially Diantre ...

It worked ... but I had to edit the file_settings file cause the setting was in each one of them ... it was easy though ... just one sed command ...
