smbpasswd -a ... smbpasswd: Command not found

help..

just installed samba 3 on Whitebox 3 via yum. i am in the proccess of configuring the smb.conf and adding a common user password to the smbpasswd -a username and getting the above error...

i have started samba just to make sure it is running, but what has changed to make the smbpasswd become unknown?

this is first time mucking with samba 3, i have only mess with older vs and only limited amounts. this is my 4th time using samba just to give you a clue as to how new i am.

Does that mean you got the nic to work?
I guess you are having your share of problems. It kinda sounds like samba didn't get installed completely or something.
At the website for whitehat, they said yum can be used. I would recommend using that or apt-get if you are having any issues with normal rpm installs.

yes the NIC works, as it is a live web and e-mail server currently, and i use SSH to access and controll it.

i have no clue what the commands are for but posted the results here to see if any of the guru's around here could help me get going in the right direction to fix it.

those commands came from my LUG (linux users group) e-mail list. just figured the more ppl looking at the issue and having the information, the faster things might get resolved.

well the LUG said to run updatedb and for what ever reason after doing that command and seeing nothing on the screen i had access to all of my commands for samba, and now have it up and running on that server.

so if someone could please explain to me what that command does to the system, and how it worked id appriciate the education.

if anyone else runs into that problem, try it, who knows it might work for you.
