SMB and mount

What happens when I press alt-F2 and fill in smb://servername/share

Why am I able to access my home NAS that way and not via mount?

To use mount I tried: "mount -t smbfs", which is not installed on my system (and I see no reason to do so if alt-F2 works). "mount -t cifs" which tells me wrong fs type. "smbmount" also not installed on my system...

Then again, how does the alt-F2 smb:// method works?
How can I get this working command line?

Nautilus and many other file browsers have the SMB client built in so smbmount is not required. If you want to mount a windows network share from the command line you need to install the samba package.

sudo apt-get install samba
