Smartd

Hello All,

Ok i have just found one thread regarding this and googling is not helping me either.

I have a RHEL 4. It gives me an error " smartd dead but subsys locked"

I have tried killing the PID and deleted from /var/lock/subsys and /var/run also.

Restarted the process..still getting the same error.

Do i have to uninstall or is there someway i can work around this issue?

Thanks in advance,

Atul

Mainly hardware changes, such as adding or removing hard drives, external hard drives, etc. Also, have you made any changes to the smartd configuration?

havent touched smartd configuration. Been updating the softwares etc..Before i joined in , the main server of ours crashed so this present server was built from scratch and the guy who configured it , must have missed something . If u can tell me what to look for i can post you that info.

What type of hard drives are in the system? IDE, SATA, SCSI, etc?

According to the spec sheet for a Dell PowerEdge 1800, it would either be SCSI or SATA. The reason I ask about the hard drives is that smartd only works with SATA drives when you are using the IDE drivers. Check out the smartmontools website for more info.

Quote:
Smartmontools should work correctly with SATA drives under both Linux 2.4 and 2.6 kernels, if you use the standard IDE drivers in drivers/ide. If you use the new libata drivers, it won't work correctly because libata doesn't yet support the needed ATA-passthrough ioctl() calls. Jeff Garzik, the libata developer, says that this support will be added to libata in the future. When this happens, we'll add support to smartmontools for a new SATA/libata device type '-d sata'. Typically, to force an SATA disk to run using the standard (non-libata) drivers, you must use the BIOS to select "legacy mode" for the controller. If the IDE driver doesn't support your particular SATA controller, or the controller doesn't have a legacy interface, then only libata can be used. Unless the hard disk controller on the system motherboard is Intel, VIA or nVidia, standard IDE drivers may not work
So if the drives are SATA, I believe this might be the problem.

I might be signing off soon, but I'll definitely check back to see how things are going. Good luck.
