sluggishness when more than 4 windows/tabs open in konqueror/firefox

i have an athlon xp 2.0 ghz and 1GB of ddr ram...running slack 10.0 and kde 3.3 beta 2
my problem is konqueror and firefox behave ok when there are two-three tabs/windows open...but when more than that is open theres a general slow down between tab switching or clicking on another window..ive set konqueror to preload into ram and also keep open instances...

also, is there anyway to speed up kde's startup? u know, the 'loading peripherals, blah blah screen'??

any help is appreciated...thanx
