Sluggish programs spamming gettimeofday() calls. What gives?

(Using Mageia 3 x86, with the Gnome fallback desktop, on my Eee netbook)

Granted this is a relatively slow machine, I've noticed that some programs are really bad on it. In particular, gnome-panel menus are very unresponsive, and Firefox lags a lot doing... well, almost anything.

So I ran strace on gnome-panel. When it gets slow, the output starts looking like this:

Code:
gettimeofday({1378084833, 122486}, NULL) = 0
gettimeofday({1378084833, 136708}, NULL) = 0
gettimeofday({1378084833, 153818}, NULL) = 0
gettimeofday({1378084833, 168463}, NULL) = 0
gettimeofday({1378084833, 186106}, NULL) = 0
gettimeofday({1378084833, 195519}, NULL) = 0
gettimeofday({1378084833, 206257}, NULL) = 0
gettimeofday({1378084833, 221009}, NULL) = 0
gettimeofday({1378084833, 235330}, NULL) = 0
gettimeofday({1378084833, 246400}, NULL) = 0
gettimeofday({1378084833, 259817}, NULL) = 0
gettimeofday({1378084833, 273886}, NULL) = 0
gettimeofday({1378084833, 286054}, NULL) = 0
gettimeofday({1378084833, 299452}, NULL) = 0
gettimeofday({1378084833, 313639}, NULL) = 0
gettimeofday({1378084833, 325927}, NULL) = 0
gettimeofday({1378084833, 339179}, NULL) = 0
gettimeofday({1378084833, 353143}, NULL) = 0
I tried stracing Firefox, and it dumped out even more gettimeofday() calls - it was just spamming them nonstop. The more stuff I did in the Firefox GUI, the more calls it spammed.

By contrast, GVim - a fast application - only invokes gettimeofday() when it closes.

What on Earth is going on here?

Edit: 'strace -c' shows gettimeofday() using 45% of the total time taken up by system calls during a Firefox session.

Edit 2: Ah. What is going on here, is that my getimeofday() is slower on my netbook than any of my other computers. Why, and what I can do about it, I don't know...
