Slow Samba Transferring

I've recently installed and configured samba.. But transfers are really slow, 1mb takes like 3 seconds or so ..

This is my config:

Code:
[global]

  workgroup = linux
  server string = Samba Server %v

  log file = /var/log/samba/log.%m
  max log size = 50

  socket options = TCP_NODELAY SO_RCVBUF=8192 SO_SNDBUF=8192
  interfaces = lo eth0
  bind interfaces only = yes

  hosts allow = 127.0.0.1 192.168.
  hosts deny = 0.0.0.0/0

  security = share
  guest account = samba
  guest ok = yes

[public]

  comment = pub
  browseable = yes
  public = yes
  create mode = 0744
  guest ok = yes
  path = /home/samba/public
  writeable = no

[upload]

  comment = upload
  browseable = yes
  public = yes
  create mode = 0766
  guest ok = yes
  path = /home/samba/upload
  writeable = yes

It might actually be at the link layer.

Check ifconfig for drops, errors, and generally all the numbers that should be low or nill. (for instance I have had over 1.9gb of transfer in under a week and I have had 1 over run)

Your samba transfers should be near ftp speeds. (it's a good place to make a comparison)

I'm able to get double your transfer speeds and I'm using no socket options.

I actually have got some problems with my network card..

eth0: MII PHY not found -- this device may not operate correctly.
--from dmesg

I have a Winbond switchcard using the tulip driver
winbond-840.c:v1.01-d (2.4 port) Nov-17-2001 Donald Becker <becker@scyld.com>

But I have never found out how to correct this problem .. It has been nagging me on Slackware also, but I can't remember what I did back then, but before I moved to Debian I backed up some files on my server and it was fast, moving them to my brothers Windows XP computer.
