slow hardware

hi. i seem to be having a problem with my cd drives.

i have a dual boot system with xp/suse 8.2. on my hda. i also have a raided pci hd for hde/f. initially my computer ran fine with both os's, but i had some issues with my dvd playback with xine (and kplayer for that matter)

i ended up running the command

#hdparm -d1 /dev/hdc

to try and "enable dma" on my drive

my hdc is a dvd player (/media/dvd - default)
my hdd is a dvd+r (/media/cdrecorder - default)

after running this command, my dvd player worked fine.

when rebooting back into xp, all of my hardware seems to be going annoyingly slow (when ripping a dvd iso on my computer, for example, i can only achieve speeds of ~1.6x, where i used to get ~4.6x). I am new to suse and to linux in general, and was wondering if the command i used would somehow affect my windows in any way.

if anyone has any ideas, i would appreciate them.

I really don't think that it would...

Did you turn the computer off completely, or just reboot... if you reboot, the cddrive will retain whatever settings it was last passed...

If you turn it off/unplug it, it should be completely reset.

Give that a go.

at first i did just restart and i dont believe that it made much of a difference. later that day, after it had been turned completely off, it did seem to slow down.

one thing that i did notice was that originally my raid took a long time to load while still in my bios (asus award bios), almost as if it were timing out (~1.5 mins - quite slow for a new, fast computer). now my raid loads really quick, but my computer speed suffers.

i hope that helps

thx for the reply anyways

jason
