Slow Bootup

For some reason once my RH9 system starts to load Gnome, it's really slow. The splash screen takes forever to load, and when it does, it doesn't go through all the cool little animations...it seems to jump ahead of itself and the Gnome desktop comes into view...but then the panel is slow loading. It wasn't always like this...it just started today. I've rebooted, with no results. I don't get it...I haven't made any significant changes. Any ideas?

What may have happened is that there was a crashed process in your last session which is being restarted when the session reloads. Do you have "Autosave session on logout" set, or did you check the "Save Session" checkbox when you logged out? Do you notice anything odd in the icons on the startup splash screen (like Nautilus appearing twice, for example)?

This has happened to me a couple of times (OK, more than a couple), and the crashed process can be hard to track down (as it's not always visible in the System Monitor in the initial session where it crashed, and sometimes not until after a reboot, or logging into a different type of session and then back into GNOME).

Some ways I've found that, with twiddling, can eventually fix this (if that's the problem):

1. Open the System Monitor (right click on a system monitor display on your panel and choose "Open System Monitor", or use the Main Menu) and end or kill any suspicious looking processes, then log out (save the session) and back in.

2. Open the GNOME Control Center, go to Desktop Applications=>Advanced=>Sessions and remove anything that seems odd in the "Current Session" tab. Again, log out, saving the session, and back in.

3. Log out and back in to the "Failsafe Gnome" session. Again check the System Monitor and the Current Session tab of the Sessions applet in the GNOME Control Center to find any suspicious processes and end them. Logging into the Failsafe GNOME session often causes these processes to become visible when they weren't before (no idea why). Then try logging back into your regular session. If it hasn't helped, you can always log into your failsafe session, as it seems to use all the user settings of the regular session in any case.

Hope this helps.
