slocate -u stealing resources

Lately my system has become a bit sluggish, after startup, running "top" shows me that something called updatedb runs slowing things down. Apparantly updatedb is run by cron (cron.daily) and its just really another command for "slocate -u". Reading manpages a found out that its supposed to make my searching go faster. Since I dont really use this search function a lot, Is it really necessary running this every day?

Any other tips for making my box run smothe again? Galeon recently started crashing a lot... I know gnome (nautilus) eats system power for breakfast but it really ran okay some time ago!

Cheers, Klod

no it's not necessary at all, you can remove it from the cron system no problem. it's just a flat database used by the locate or slocate command to find a file really quckly.
