Unhappy slackware startup lilo problem

when trying to install lilo in slackware 8.0, i receive a "you got an error message, so you can't install lilo, you'll have to boot from diskette". i did a full install (2 gb) with no problems except that.

I created a boot disk with lilo on it, but everytime i load it, it just shows "LI" and that's it.

just "LI".

now i'm stuck with slackware installed, but i can't load it. I'm a very big newbie at linux and especially to slackware, so take it easy on me if this is a very easy problem.

Try booting the cd, at the boot prompt type in the path of your root partition, something like this ( X is the number of the root partition you setup ):

boot: linux root=/dev/hdaX

where did you get that error message? was that LI thing after you installed and when you were trying to boot afterwards?

How are your drives configured? (for example what drive is windows on).

If trikykids' instructions don't work then post again and i might just be able to help. From the sounds of it it might just be lilo screwing up (anyone else any suggestions?) and i have had the same prob. You can use your installation cd (the one you used to install with) to get lilo installed properly. By tomorrow lunch (English time) i will be able to help with any queries so.....

But we need info such as what operating systems you have installed now and where they are (the first hard drive, which partition etc.). Hope that that is not too confusing. feel free to ask anything more....

I tried his suggestion and it worked, I had to make a new bootdisk or something too. Once I got slackware working, i got a ton of errors trying to load KDE, and i just gave up.

I decided I'm going to try Red Hat, it' sounds more newbie friendly.

Here is a link to a page that has the LILO error codes. Hope it helps for future installs.
