slackware/rpm on debian
i HAVE to use a commercial xserver (long story, a whole nother thread started a year ago, dont ask). the only packaging xig offers is slackware .tgz and RPM format. they have very vague instructions on installing it on non-rpm/slackware systems, and i follow them step by step and it doesnt work (they're out of date).
im wondering if i can just install it using RPM. whenever i try it via RPM, i do "rpm -i programname" and it says it cant install RPMS and to use .deb instead. any other suggestions? i dont know how to convert .rpm to .deb using alien, help would be appreciated ASAP.

I assume you have alien installed. If not
Code:
apt-get install alien
To convert your package with alien,
Code:
alien --to-deb packagename

already did that before i posed here. what happened was it acted like it was installed ok, i got the xsvc video driver installed and compiled manually. then i installed the .deb, everything acted ok. i ran Xsetup (for xig) and it ran like it did back on mandrake, ok, so now i just need a reboot. i reboot, and nothing's changed, im still in 800x600, and cant get to 1024x768. so basically its not really installed.

You need to create a symbolic link. Kind of confusing the way they worded it; I can't tell which file should point to what. I looked at the other links for clarification and it appears that X should be a symbolic link to Xaccel. So,
Code:
ln -s /usr/X11R6/bin/Xaccel /usr/X11R6/bin/X

Fatal Error:
could not open /dev/xsvc
i checked /dev and there's an xsvc file, i dont know if its a symlink, a file or a binary or what.

suggestions? email support doesnt seem to be helping much, they just told me to read the readme and check to make sure the symlinks are in order. all should be ok, but its not.
