Slackware installation

Hi,

I am new to Linux and trying to install Slackware ver 8.0 on an old Dell machine. The machine has:

CPU i486
Memory 16Mb
HDD 340Mb - IDE
No CD Rom Drive
NO network card
No modem
Running MS DOS

I downloaded slackware and created a boot and a root floppy using RAWRITE. When I try to boot, it shows only "LI" and hangs.

Any help will be appreciated.

TIA,
Harsham

Have you gotten past booting off the floppies and installing or is this just after creating the disks? If so, it's trying to use LILO and the disks aren't set up quite correctly. Any precise info is great.

Hi taz,

I created disks from the image files.
boot floppy - bare.i
root floppy - color.gz

And I am using this boot floppy for installation so it's just after creating the disks. In case floppy is bad, I tried different floppies. It is also possible that something is wrong with this machine, I tried it on another machine with the same configuration. Created slackware 7 boot floppy too, but the same problem.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Harsham

possibly jumpers wrong on the back ? (the master/slave jumpers set wrong can cause this problem)

or maybe a dodgy chipset, some of the older drives had them.

you may want to check the bios for any settings that seem weird.

unfortunatly its difficult to know exactly what the problem is with the installation and what exact hardware is. try to find that out and then check compatibility.

Alex

P.S. you may also want to check that the cables aren't loose (its worth a try!).

Thanks for the help, Alex and taz.

Looks like there was some problem with RAWRITE program. Downloaded RawWriteWin and created installation floppies again. It worked! Slackware is running now!!

Cheers!
Harsha
